How to Elope in Colorado: You Can Elope in Colorado and Marry Yourselves

How to elope in Colorado: it’s simple–one option is to just marry yourselves! Ok ok, what does that mean, exactly?! What are the Colorado elopement laws?

It’s really very simple. In the state of Colorado, you do not need to have any witnesses present and are not required to have an officiant. All you need to do is:

  1. Head to a Colorado marriage license office to obtain your license once you arrive in Colorado (some even can be filled out online). Licenses must be from the state in which you’re eloping.
  2. Bring your ID and checkbook.
  3. Follow the instructions to check out.
  4. Then you’re all set to go to exchange your vows. A.K.A. have what’s called a self solemnization marriage ceremony.
  5. Next, sign your license. While you don’t have to have witnesses, you can if you like. Heck, your dog could even put their paw print as a witness here (yes, that’s not a joke–in Colorado, your dog can serve as a legal witness) So, fun right!? We love our dogs here…
  6. Follow the instructions on your license to mail it back in to the legal office for records.

Ta-da! That’s how to elope in Colorado!

P.s. Want a self solemnization script? Scroll down, we’ve got you covered!

How to Elope in Colorado:
What is An Elopement, really?

green blob graphic

What is An Elopement, really?

Let’s begin here: what is an elopement really? Elopements are customized wedding day experiences centered around a couple and their story. That’s it. Traditional weddings, on the other hand, usually get centered around extravagance, tradition, and religious or familial obligations, often catered more to the guests in attendance than the couple themselves. Elopements put the couples’ desires and story above or alongside the traditions they choose to include.

So really, there isn’t too big a difference between getting married conventionally and eloping. Elopements are about the couple and traditional weddings are about appeasing those on your guest list.

Why Should You Elope in Colorado?

You’ve said “yes” to eloping in Colorado, or maybe are really considering it now, but why should you elope in Colorado instead of elsewhere?

How to Elope in Colorado: Colorado is Beautiful No Matter The Season

Colorado is beautiful no matter the season; autumn, winter, spring, summer. You can even experience such polar abnormalities as a sunny, high-70’s day in the midst of winter, or several inches of snowfall in June. Don’t worry though, we’ll explain how to navigate these factors in our best time to elope in Colorado section of this post. Simply put, the weather is a bit wild here, but aren’t all beautiful things a bit wild?

HOW TO ELOPE IN COLORADO: Best Places to Elope in Colorado #1 Breckenridge

How to elope in Colorado:
#1 Breckenridge

Breckenridge is such a lovely mountain town, world-renowned and absolutely adorable. It does have a handful of small wedding venues you can choose from, but in Summit County (where Breck is located) you can only get married at two locations which are outdoors on public lands. Want to learn more about elopement packages for Breckenridge, Colorado, and where to get married there? Check out our Sapphire Point Wedding Guide to understand the area’s rules and permit information. Don’t worry, there are lots of options besides these two places!

We could go on for days about eloping in Colorado in Rocky Mountain National Park, but we’ll just leave it at this: it’s a lovely place to elope in Colorado. Granted, over the past few years, it’s become very restricted in regards to getting married there. Check out our Rocky Mountain National Park Wedding Guide to help you understand the ins and outs of eloping here.

#4 Golden, Colorado

How to elope in Colorado: Golden, Colorado

Golden is a lovely little town that sits in the valley of the foothills outside of Denver. While visitors from flatter parts of the country may see this view as the epic majesty of the Rocky Mountains, they really are just hills to us locals. We love them nonetheless! In Golden, you’ll find sweeping mountain views, gorgeous rivers and an adorable town to explore next to the famous Coors brewery.

How to elope in Colorado:
#5 Mount Evans Elopement

This is maybe one of our top favorite places to elope because it is WAY less busy and, in our opinion, just as lovely as parts of Rocky Mountain National Park. Mount Evans is a national park, so you’ll have to check with the park website or a ranger at the entrance to get your permits. If you hire us as your elopement photographers and guides, we can help you do this!

Hanging Lake is a gem of Colorado with its waterfalls and lake. It’s a spot you won’t want to miss even if you don’t elope here. Sadly, it is currently closed due to fires in Summer 2020, but check out Gleenwoods Springs for current status updates on the area.

If you’d love an alternate spot to go, we have an amazing place in mind but it’s one of our client-only privilege locations. It’s one of our *truly* hidden gems, not widely known or crowded with tourists and we like to keep it that way. 😉

How to elope Colorado Springs:
#7 Garden of the Gods Elopement

Garden of the Gods is another gem that is a different landscape than you’d imagine in Colorado. It’s not mountains, it is a desert formation of red rocks (not those Red Rocks). It’s located near Colorado Springs. No permit is needed, but be sure to check their website as this may be subject to change at some point. Garden of the Gods

We think you’ll get inspired by this desert elopement!

How to Elope in Colorado: Best Times To Elope in Colorado

We love weddings year round here in Colorado, but you’ll want to be mindful of the wild weather patterns Colorado has, especially in the mountains. One other thing you’ll truly want to consider if you fall in love with an area is knowing whether or not it is accessible in the season in which you plan to get married, and if so, how. Generally speaking, a lot of areas are accessible year round, you may just have to rent snowmobiles to get to some of the more remote locations, snowshoe in, or go all out and rent a private helicopter tour!

How to Elope in Colorado:
Colorado Winter Elopements

Eloping in Colorado’s winter is absolutely gorgeous. The magical snowfall coating the grounds and mountains with beautiful fresh snow is every winter-loving couple’s dreams.

The Secret Truth of How to Elope in Colorado in The Winter

We hate being a killjoy, but we also don’t want you to plan your dream winter wedding in a month that the rest of the world considers a snowy season and arrive on a muddy or dry day. True winter wonderlands usually don’t arrive in the mountains until late January or February.

Colorado has been known to have dry conditions in November and December when the majority of tourists flock to its ski towns and resorts for alpine adventures, but little do they know: this isn’t our best time in winter. But, shh, don’t tell too many people. 😉

I must add the caveat that in 2019, we had the snowiest December we’ve had in a long time. As you’ll come to learn, if you want to elope in Colorado, you have to be able to go with the flow.

Spring Elopements

How to Elope in Colorado: Spring Elopements

Colorado spring elopements are a bit of a toss up. We’ve had elopements in March with warm temperatures in the 50s with the sun shining on your skin. How it feels though, you’d think it was 70 degrees out.

But it’s important to note that February and March, sometimes April, are historically our snowiest months. Spring can arrive in the city and in the desertous parts of Colorado in April and May, but don’t expect to see any wildflowers in the mountains until late June and sometimes early July.

What's the weather like in Spring?

It can snow into early June in the mountains and may be muddy. The locals start to skip town this part of the  year because it’s called “Mud Season.” It can also be warm and sunny. Plan for all seasons if you plan a Spring Colorado elopement! If that doesn’t frighten you away, there are a lot of perks.

Perks of Spring Elopements in Colorado

You probably won’t be competing for the best dates like in the summer time or fall. All your other accommodations are probably going to be at a more affordable rate since it’s not the peak season. If you love skiing or snowboarding, you can still enjoy those into April, and in some resorts, as far as late May or occasionally the first week in June!

Summer Elopements

How to Elope in Colorado:
Colorado Summer Elopements

Eloping in Colorado in the summer is a dream. The weather is usually a bit more predictable and warmer in the summer. This is nice if you have your heart set on attire that shows a bit more skin or if you just love warmer weather. Granted, don’t expect super warm temperatures if you’re going to be in the mountains.

You can, however, expect warm weather in the more desertous locations.

Pro tip: make sure to pack enough water for yourself, it’s super easy to get dehydrated in the high mountain elevations!

Eloping in Summer in Colorado: What To Expect

You can  expect weather in the mountains to be in the 60-80s, but it could get to as low as the 50s or 40s with a decent breeze. The higher you go in elevation, it can even feel like it’s freezing with the wind chill. Make sure to look up your forecast and always have a coat and layers, no matter the season!

Eloping in Summer in Colorado: What To Expect

Mornings are usually better because thunderstorms tend to roll in in the afternoons which can make a very unsafe environment, especially if you plan to get married at the top of a mountain peak.

Fall Elopements

How to Elope in Colorado:
Colorado Fall Elopements

Fall, leaves changing, all the pumpkin flavored things (talking to you, pumpkin spice latte coffee lovers), sweaters and all the cozy feelings. Your biggest question may be: When are the fall colors going to peak if I elope in Colorado?!

When Can I See The Fall Colors?

Guess what? No one really knows because it’s never quite the same from year to year. Historically, in these high altitudes, it can be late August or September. Rarely, the fall colors will peak in very early October. Usually by mid or end of August, local forecasters will create a map showing when they estimate the colors will change by area. Sadly though, one stray snow storm can turn fall colors into a muddy brown mess.

What’s The Fall Weather like?

In the fall, you can expect the weather to be a little cooler and snow may be possible late September into October. It can also rain and thunderstorm or be sunny, dry and absolutely perfect.

These transitional seasons are a bit unpredictable here in the high country, but it is typically a slower season in more popular destinations, meaning the towns are less busy and any hotels or rental places may have a cheaper rate.

Tips for eloping in Colorado

Oh, we’re so excited you’re here! We hope you’re ready to get eloped in Colorado, but we first want to share with you our favorite tips!

How to Elope in Colorado: Tips
Get A Permit

Tips for Elope in Colorado: Get A Permit

All outdoor elopements/events  may still require a permit if you’re on any public lands. You’ll have to do your own due diligence to find this out, which may mean finding out who owns the land and giving them a call to double check. You’ll also want to make sure you know the rules of the area. No one wants to get a fine on their wedding day (believe us, it has happened!).

Feel intimidated by this? Don’t fret, this is part of what we help with.

How to Elope in Colorado: Tips
Leave No trace

Tips for Elope in Colorado: Follow Leave No Trace Principles

Follow Leave No Trace principles when eloping in the outdoors – no matter where you go on public lands. What is this, you may ask?

Leave No Trace is a non-profit organization that educates people in following a set of ethical guidelines to help keep our great outdoors protected and cared for so we can continue to enjoy these spaces for years to come. This includes respecting the land, knowing the rules of the area, and leaving only our footprints on the trails (and maybe a little part of our hearts in these beautiful places).

Check out Leave No Traceor when you hire us as your Colorado Elopement Photographers, we will guide you through what it means for your Colorado elopement wedding day. We’re certified Leave No Trace Photographers!

How to Elope in Colorado: Tips
Altitude

Tips for Elope in Colorado: Altitude, Feel The High

All right, in all seriousness, if you haven’t ever been to Colorado or a high altitude area (5,000 feet or more above sea level), we want you to know what to expect.

Altitude sickness is a real thing that may happen to even the healthiest of young people. It can make you feel dizzy or faint. Our best tips for avoiding this is to stay hydrated with electrolytes.

Pro Tip a squeeze of a whole fresh lemon or lime in your water can add all the electrolytes you need!

If you have guests or family with you, make sure you have alternative plans if they cannot make it to your ceremony spot because of altitude sickness–we’ve seen this happen!

Fickle Weather

Couple in wedding attire in an epic Colorado spot.

Tips for Elope in Colorado: The Weather is Fickle

The weather is variable up in the mountains, but the great part of Colorado is that it can downpour for an hour, and a short time later there’s full sunshine with not a cloud in sight. Or our personal favorite is sunshine during rain which creates some amazing contrasting clouds for photos.

Consider a morning celebration to avoid afternoon thunderstorms in the summer. Or make sure you’re working with an amazing photographer to help you have a Plan B or maybe C.
