Secert Location in Cathedral Park for Couples & Engagement Photos Portland, Oregon

What if I told you that Cathedral Park for engagement photos in Portland, Oregon, was not just about the arches or even its ranking as one of the top parks? The iconic St. John’s Bridge, with its green architecture set against the dark trees of Forest Park, Portland, Cathedral Park is a wonder that melts the hearts of romantics.  But what if you could also capture the moody forest, the river’s tides, and splash in the water for your Cathedral Park engagement, couples, or anniversary photos?

Hi Darlin, I’m Lumalia, a couples, anniversary, and engagement photographer here in Portland, Oregon, now celebrating couples madly in love for nearly two decades! Wow, we cannot believe it either.  Here at Celebrate Again, we’re less about the perfect location and pose and more about making the magic happen, so who you truly are together gets a surge of Celebration, not just documentation.

When you hear Cathedral Park, most people think: Iconic arches, but I’m about to let you in on an epic secert to make your Cathedral Park engagement couple photos even more playful, cinematic, and you, because who wants photos that “look like everyone else.”

I mean, the St. John’s Bridge arches are beautiful, look at those sexy V shapes framed so much like many of us all adore and love, lol, if you know you know…hehe.

How fun are they to frame, to get posed, to see greatness, and feel like “Ya, we’re that rad too?”

The Cathedral Park Engagement Couples Secert Location, Most Miss

Ok, I’ve been killing you! You’re now shouting “Lumlia, where is this secert engagement photo spot!?”

Well, my darling, turn your cute little head away from the arches to the north and notice a HUGE parking lot for boats. Then look west, A WHOLE RIVER for that bridge! couple walking on sandy shore during engagement photos in Cathedral Park

Yes! You can get on the water during your Cathedral Park couples, engagement, or anniversary photos!

Picture it:

  • A little picnic on the sandy shores.
  • Jumping off the newly built dock thanks to a partnership with Portland Parks and Human Access Project!
  • Or strap on your paddle boards or kayak and get out on the water after you frolic around the park!

Pro Tips for Photos at Cathedral Park

Your Photographer Needs a Photography Permit

Make sure your photographer has a Portland City Parks photo permit. They may have you cover some of it if they aren’t local and photograph here often.

Yes we can get away without it, but we love these parks and want to keep supporting them!

(Hi! It’s me Lumalia, fresh in the wild!) Yes, I WILL get in the water with you!

Leave No Trace

  • Even though it’s an iconic place, don’t geo-tag on social media or even mention the location. Sometimes, when things go viral, parks are not equipped to handle surges in people. Let your experience be shared with people you love in person, and the stories you tell at the dinner table.
  • Stay out of sensitive vegetation, and follow signs not to enter certain areas.
  • Read local park rules.

Just because you’re taking photos doesn’t mean you can break the park rules.

Want to practice full Leave No Trace? We’ve got your back. We’re Leave No Trace certified photographers.  Throughout our session together, we’ll make sure that we know all the protocols to help keep beautiful places, beautiful.

Be Safe Swimming

Swimming in Portland is usually wise between July and October. Before then, it’s a hardcore cold plunger, which I only recommend if you’re a cold-plunger person.

Yes, it will be cute for photos, but no one wants to get hyperthermia or adrenal shock and be out with a cold the next day.

Trust me, as a wellness practitioner, don’t push it for photos without prior experience.

Also! If you’re jumping off the dock, watch out for fishermen’s fishing lines; they can be so invisible!

Have a Permit & Necessities for Boating

If you’re jumping on a paddleboard, a kayak, or even getting on a boat, make sure your boat (yes, even SUPs) has an Oregon fishing permit, a whistle, and a life jacket on board. I know it’s not cute for photos, but you also don’t want to get ticketed. It can be on your board rather than on your body if you’re a seasoned swimmer.

Sunsets Earlier

One cute note about Cathedral Park for engagement photos: the sun actually sets earlier than the normal sunset.

Forest Park, towering over the Willamette River, casts an early shadow, so plan an hour before sunset to be safe. Or work with us, and we know how to find the PERFECT cinematic sunset time.

Cathedral Park Engagement Photos Quick Planning Tips

Best season for Cathedral park Engagement, Anniversary or Wedding Photos:

Spring, Summer, and Fall. Winter is lovely but it rains pretty consistently in the winter. However, surprise sunny warm days do happen often in January!

Make sure if you’re planning a wedding to get a wedding permit.

Best time of day:

Late evening will be beautiful for sunset! However, the morning glow can be beautiful as well. Avoid lunch time or afternoons.

Parking:

There is the best parking near the dock. Check out my map above for a dropped pin.

Please note there is a fee to park in Cathedral Park. You can pre-download the Portland Kitty Parking App, or bring your card to pay there at the kiosks. Fees range from $5-10 per hour.

If you do park near the boating dock, make sure to select small car and not boat parking.

When parking in the dock area, make sure to park in the designated car spots vs boat spots.

Permits:

Again, your photographer will need a permit, and if you plan your wedding, you’ll need a permit.

Rain backup:

The best part of Cathedral Park is you can shoot under the arches and still get epic photos!

Hey, I’m Lumalia, couples photographer, photographer, author, certified somatic movement yoga teacher, and the main voice behind Celebrate Again. I call myself a connection architect because I have a deep passion for guiding us all to fall back in love with life through states of beauty, but many of us are far from feeling at home in our own bodies, so we seek to find safety in others.

Yikes, that’s scary, I know; I did that for three decades, too, until I returned home to myself.

I’m so excited to share with you all I’ve learned and this beautiful journey back home to what makes you absolutely stunning just because you are alive today.
