Summer Portland Engagement Photo Locations

The golden months of Portland are iconic, for good reason. We have nearly 16 hours of sunshine in late June. Sunshine is usually in the forecast with occasional July rainstorms. But who doesn’t love a romantic frolic in the warm rain?
But don’t forget to bring a jacket for the evening because once the sun goes down, you’ll remember you’re further north than you realize.
If cloud cover or rain is forecast, don’t fret, that means epic sunsets and possible rainbows! So plan accordingly.
Make sure to hire a photographer who knows how to calculate the accurate sunset time for your exact location! Many locations lose light before the actual astronomical sunset time. Book a session with us; we know how to catch the best golden light at any engagement photo location in Portland.

By hiring us, as your couple’s photographers, you not only capture beautiful moments together, but we also create an experience that feels like a date night and a celebration of your love. So sigh easy and know we can handle the nuanced logistics for you.
Sellwood River Front

Best Time of Day: Sunset or early morning
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed
Photography Permit: Yes
Head down south along the Willamette River, past downtown Portland, and tucked into an adorable neighborhood is Sellwood River Front Park, complete with a dock and sandy beaches on low tide days.
Come here in the late summer with your kayak, splash in the water (checking water quality before diving in.), or picnic on the beach front.
Bring your pup here for some off-leash dog play, or stroll through Oaks Bottom Wilderness Park to play in between the trees before or after your riverfront adventure.
Or if you’re visiting during the winter, book a session with Guss Traveling Sauna for a super romantic date night photo session in the winter months and end with a cold plunge in the river.
International Rose Test Garden

Best Time of Day: Late afternoon or early morning
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends and evenings
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed
Photography Permit: Yes
Once you’re done exploring downtown, slip up SW Park Place, explore Washington Park, and meet your photographer at the International Rose Test Garden. Known for its award-winning roses, your eyeballs will be exploding with roses, and so will your nostrils. If you have allergies, bring medication! These beauties create a stunning smell.
Pro tips: Make sure to pay for parking and arrive with plenty of time to find a spot, as the Rose Garden fills up quickly on weekends and in the summer months.
By June, some flowers are blooming, but July is really the peak rose season for the Rose Garden.
Make sure you stay on the trails when taking photos and work with a photographer who practices Leave No Trace, so you don’t get kicked out of the park. The root systems are sensitive to walking inside the rows, but a talented photographer knows how to keep you on the trail and make it look like you’re deep in a sea of roses!
Cathedral Park & St. John’s Bridge

Best Time of Day: Sunset
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends or during events
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed
Photography Permit: Yes
Head up north, following along the Willamette River, you’ll find the famous St. John’s Bridge and Cathedral Park. Known for its beautiful arches and the greenery of the park tucked next to the river, this makes for a favorite engagement photo location in Portland, or a perfect spot for an anniversary celebration, or even a small wedding or elopement. Cathedral park is perfect for golden hour in Portland with the sun setting above Forest park, it’s absolutely stunning!
No matter what, you’re here to take photos for, make sure your photographer has a permit from Portland Parks and Rec, or you have a permit for your wedding at Cathedral Park.

Fall Engagement Photo in Portland, Oregon
Fall colors in Portland for engagement photos, couple or anniversary photo experiences often arrive as early as Late September and sometimes as late as November. The year and the current weather will affect when the trees turn colors.
Pro tip: Fall colors sometimes exist in a short window. The weather can come in and blow away the colors in as little as 24 hours.
Hiring a local Portland photographer like us, who includes a rain plan and location curation as part of your couples photography experience, can help you find the perfect location and time to catch the fall colors.

Japanese Garden
Best Time of Day: late morning Crowds: Usually busy on weekends Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed Photography Permit: Yes
The Japanese Garden in Portland is raved about for its fall colors. While their website says they don’t typically do portrait photography, it cannot hurt to ask to fill out their form here and come during quieter hours. If you’re looking for an alternative, they recommend the Lan Su Chinese Garden if your request is declined. Pro Traveler Trip: If you’re just coming to visit, it’s a perfect place to explore the fall colors, and then meet your photographer in Washington Park for more fall colors. All locations require a parking fee and a permit for taking photos. Hire a professional who can help you get the proper permits. Note: the Japanese Garden does have a separate entrance fee.Laurelhurst Park

Crowds: Usually busy on weekends or during events
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed, except in dog park area
Photography Permit: Yes
Laurelhurst Park is an adorable neighborhood park in SE Portland, perfect for fall engagement photos with lots of deciduous trees that create beautiful colors.
Featuring a little pond on the east side of the park, it’s a lovely place to stroll around the park to capture some romantic couple photos together.

Hoyt Arboretum

Best Time of Day: late afternoon
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends

Hoyt Arboretum is one of the most memorable Pacific Northwest fall locations in Portland for engagement photos on the forest trails. With its beautiful deciduous trees mixed with redwoods, this place comes alive with a stunning experience, yes, especially in the fall rain. Hoyt makes for some beautiful filtered light coming through on sunny days, creating a truly cinematic feel. Plus, when those red woods get wet, it’s a smell that will make your brain dance little happy swirls!
Make sure to check with a local photographer about what trees are turning in the park, as fall colors can come and go quickly!
Winter Portland Engagement Photo Locations

Most would say that engagement photos in Portland in the winter are a bad idea because, well, rain. However, rain does not have to mean you cannot have romantic couple photos. In fact, I’d say the rain can create a lot of mood and cinematic couple experiences.
Working with the right photographer who has experience in photographing in the rain and can help you curate an experience to feel confident in the rain and weather will make your couple’s photography experience that much more enjoyable, which is exactly what we do! Book your couple’s winter photo session with us now to make sure you’re fully prepared for your winter engagement photos.
Downtown Portland
Best Time of Day: Sunset or early morning
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends or during events
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed
Photography Permit: Depends

Downtown Portland, from the City Hall buildings to the SW Park blocks, holds some lovely charm for city-loving folks. Cross the street for some Beatles-like photos, or explore the Saturday Market for a more community feel.
If you are visiting during the summer, don’t forget to check out the PSU Farmers’ market running Saturday mornings.
Pro tips: Downtown often has a lot of events going on, so make sure your photographer helps you double-check road closures and festivals.
The Winter Lights festival is a big festival that could also make some beautiful engagement photos if you hire an experienced photographer who knows how to take rad photos at night.
Greenhouses
Best Time of Day: Afternoons Crowds: Depend on the store Pets Allowed: Depends on the Store Photography Permit: Depends on the Store
Looking for local greenhouses is a cute idea to get the feel of summer months without having to bear the cold for Portland engagement sessions. While we haven’t yet visited Pomarius Nursery, they seem to have a very cute storefront that could be a good spot for engagement photos. Reach out to them with a personal email and see if they can. (When you hire us for a Celebrate Again session, we’ll do this for you!) Asking to come in non-busy hours is always an easier yes for business owners, or seeing if you can pay a small fee for them to stay open an hour later one day.Local Coffee or Bookshops

Best Time of Day: Afternoons or down hours
Crowds: Depend on the store
Pets Allowed: Depends on Store
Photography Permit: Depends on Store
Coffee or book lover? Why not take your engagement photos in a coffee shop or a bookshop? Don’t forget to call or ask a manager ahead of time about taking photos at their business.
(Nervous about this, we got you. When you hire us for a Celebrate Again session, we help you navigate all the location logistics!)
Airbnb’s & Boutique Hotels

Best Time of Day: Afternoons or down hours
Crowds: Depends on the hotel
Pets Allowed: Depends on the hotel
Photography Permit: Depends
Staying in a stunning place? Reach out to the host or manager and see if you can take engagement photos there. Try photographing not only in rooms but also in hotel lobbies and around other parts of the property that the hosts allow you to access.
If you’re not disrupting other guests’ experience, often, hosts or hotels will gladly say yes. Some may have a small fee for you to pay, while others may gladly just charge as much for photos from your photographer.
Often, many of these locations love to have photos for their websites and social platforms. Go in with an open mind and asking politely can get you a long way!

Spring Engagement & Couple Photo Locations in Portland, Oregon
Spring has to be one of my favorite times in Portland, even though the weather can be absolutely nuts. I’m talkin’, spring feels one day, sixty degrees sunshine another, or full-on moody cinematic vibes. Portland spring keeps a girl on her toes. However, those gorgeous seasonal blooms make it worth the weather adventures.
But the flowers that bloom in Portland are world-renowned. You can easily find yourself skipping through any neighborhood in Portland and getting a beautiful whiff of blooms. (Bring your allergy medication or pray for another day of rain if you’re visiting! haha)
Working with a local photographer (like us) can help you know when blooms are happening or are gone. Heavy rains and winds can come in overnight and knock out all the cherry blossom trees in a few hours. So come with an open mind and heart if you’re making plans. We help our couples always have a plan B that is just as exciting for their photo experiences.
Tom McCall Waterfront for Cherry Blossoms
Best Time of Day: Late or early morning
Crowds: Very busy on weekend during the blooms
Pets Allowed: Yes, on leash
Photography Permit: Yes
Spring in Portland smells like cherry blossoms. This is a stunning location for Portland engagement photos.
Pro Tip: Parking in this area is all paid street parking. Up on the blocks, Evertte & Davis St are good bets to find some spots. Or even better, take local transportation. Be careful when crossing the street and walkways as bikers travel very quickly along these paths. For nonlocals, it can be an adjustment to look out for bikers, walkers, and cars, so keep your eyes open!
This area can get very busy, so I suggest visiting on a weekday morning to catch the light on the blooms, rather than in the evening or at sunset, which doesn’t really reach the Tom McCall Waterfront because of the buildings.
Along the Tom McCall waterfront is where the most blooms happen. However, when you hire local photographers like us, we know which trees are blooming and when. We can help you find some neighbors tucked away with just as many blooms popping! Hire us to handle all the location logistics!

Washington Park

Best Time of Day: Late afternoon
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends or during events
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed
Photography Permit: Yes
Nestled all around Washington Park are plenty of cherry trees, camellias, magnolias, and rhododendron flowers, all blooming in the spring. If you’re ready to be dazzled, Washington Park is your go-to.
Don’t forget your engagement photographer will need a permit. Also, make sure to research local closures, events, and park shutdowns.
Washington Park is a big park (410 acres), so having a photographer like us who includes location planning in curating your couple’s photo experience as part of our services can help you find where in the park the blooms are best for engagement or couple photos.
Mt Tabor

Best Time of Day: Sunset
Crowds: Usually busy on weekends or during events
Pets Allowed: Yes, but leashed, except in dog area
Photography Permit: Yes
Mount Tabor, built from dormant volcanoes, is a lovely place for Portland engagement photos. If you’re looking for stunning trees, epic sunset views, romantic cherry blossom trees, or just a romantic place Mt Tabor is it!
Don’t forget your photographer will need a permit here. Mt Tabor is also home to some epic dance parties and events, so make sure to hire a local photographer who can help make sure you don’t end up in a rave or the Soapbox Derby, where the whole park is shut down.
